We have a new age limitation of 16. It has been our experience that older usually means better and more experienced. The game may also contain material that is suited to more mature readers and writers, and we would rather not be affiliated with a load of underage kids. Sorry.
Make sure you have read the list of current characters and character traits NOT being accepted at this time. If you include something in your application that is on the banned list, whether you think your idea is good or not, it will automatically be denied. If you are unsure whether your potential character might fall under one of the banned traits, ask a mod.
This game is pretty large and has allowed OC's (original characters) since its conception. Due to this, there are a lot of characters. I know it may appear cumbersome, but take a look at the currently played characters and their powers and try not to create a character that is similar. It also helps to err on the side of being realistic. Five characters with pink hair, mutant-based game or not, is not realistic. Granted, it would be a pretty arduous task to investigate every character in the game, so it would be best if you asked about something as opposed to just doing it.
It would be helpful if you had at least a base knowledge in the X-men genre. This game began on a more movie-based setting but has developed into something that encompasses different plot-lines and characters from the comics. Uncannyxmen.net is an excellent source for your character-creating needs. Before creating an OC, did you know that many major canon characters are still available for play? Also, there are so many minor canon characters that you could always take one of them and turn them into your own, lessening your chance of duplicating a current in-game character or canon.
When creating your character and the overall theme and hope for that character is to snag it a boyfriend or girlfriend, you are probably in danger of creating a Mary Sue or a Gary Stu. Giving this character homosexual status (gay or lesbian) does not automatically negate Sue/Stu status. (Openly bisexual characters will be under watch to assure that they're not around to hook up with everything under the sun.)
Speaking of Mary Sues and Gary Stus, DON'T MAKE ONE. If you do not know what one is, again, you are probably in danger of making one. Here is a good place explaining what a sue/stu is and what you should do in an effort to avoid them. Some signs you might have created a sue/stu include; describing any body part in a sexual manner in your physical description, giving your character uber traits such as Jane is a prima ballerina, plays the guitar, is an ace in physics and math, has a perfect complexion, has the prettiest eyes, etc., and developing the notion that you are your character. You aren't, and this is called psychosis. There are also wangst sues/stus. Dead parents, some non-canon random drug addiction, cutting, and anything else that tends to victimize the character at every turn is bad...very very bad.
This one should be a given considering it is a writing game, but please know how to write. Spelling, grammar, and the ability to tell a story are integral. Your inability to spell and write complete and complex sentences would suck the fun right out of the game. At best, no one will play with you, and at worst, potential players will see your quality of writing and think that is how everyone in the game plays. Proofreading and spell check are your friends.
There will be a two-week probationary period for all new applicants. What this means is that upon being accepted, you will have all of the privileges of everyone else in the game but your ability and contribution to the game will be scrutinized. If your writing is up to par and people seem willing and want to interact with you, you remain in the game. If not, you will be politely removed from the game.
